Plant Hire is a category of Equipment Hire that provides equipment and machinery on loan to construction companies, developers and private individuals on a short and long term basis.
Examples of the type of equipment are minidiggers, bulldozers, and excavators, through to pneumatic drills.
The Equipment Hire Industry consists of mainly small family firms through to multi-national companies. As stated, most of these companies are very small and have 5 or less employees on average. The largest firms in the UK for example have thousands of staff each.
Some of the biggest companies have billion pound turnovers. Europe is a major player worldwide within this industry and has 5 out of 10 of the World’s leading players.
The term ‘Equipment Hire’ and ‘Plant Hire’ is most prevalent and exclusively used as the category defining term in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and parts of Europe.
The United States tends to use the term ‘Rental’.
The range of Equipment and Plant Hire varies considerably. Some firms specialise in one or two sectors, for example CherryPickers. Major companies can carry as many as hundreds of thousands of pieces of equipment.
At the beginning of 2009 a detailed study was carried out on the European Equipment Hire Industry. Eleven Countries were the focus of this study. They included, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the UK.
The European Equipment Hire market was said to be worth €33.6 Billion in 2008.
€24.4 Billion of that was for non-operated plant hire and machinery hire. Self-operated plant hire. And €9.2 Billion was for Operated Plant Hire.

Here’s the interesting bit, there was a surprisingly high number of companies within this industry sector. In the 11 countries that were the subject of the study,there were 36,400 active companies in Equipment Hire in 2006 and they employed a total of 177,500 people between them in 22,400 locations.
