Size of the UK Tool & Equipment Hire Industry

Posted on 14 May 2010 by admin

An interest report was carried out and researched by Executive Hire News in 2007.
They looked into how the industry is dominated by the top ten key players,

and even then how there is a gulf between even the 9th and 10th places.
After the 10th position the rest of the industry come almost nowhere. There really isn’t an industry I can compare where there is almost no middle ground. It consists of Big and Little players. EquipmentHire.com is looking to change the balance, but more on our heady plans in the future.
It should be noted this report of facts and figures is 3 years old and focuses only on the Tool and Equipment Hire Industry. It doesn’t take into account that ‘Equipment‘ can, and is everything. Not just Plant and Machinery, but Audio Visual Equipment, Outdoor Equipment, Stages etc.

The ‘industry’ was calculated to be worth about £1.6 Billion in 2007. This suggested that the top 10 companies had a 53% market share. With Speedy hire having a 17% market share alone!

The table listed below represents a forecast and prediction of the year ahead, when the report was made by EHN.
The average growth rate for the top 10 was 15% and Speedy had a 32% share of the Top Ten.

More and more the smaller players in the industry look to be getting squeezed out.

Top Ten Players:

1 Speedy Hire 280 £ Million
2 HSS Hire Service 165 £ Million
3 Brandon Hire 95 £ Million
4 Hewden (tools) 91.5 £ Million
